Last year I ordered some of his hybrids for seed production. The OT hybrids that are possible to order here in Norway are older hybrids with low fertility. Brians hybrids have high fertility and can give many seeds in each pod. Some of the OT lilies he send me looks like aurelians more than common OT lilies. The reason is his hybrid Roy's Select. Roy's Select are a lily, aurelian, that acts like a 3n, it can be pollinated with 4n OT pollen and vice versa. The offspring from Roy's Select x 4n OT pollen looks like aurelians but will give seeds when pollinated with pollen from other OT lilies. The seedlings can also be pollinated with oriental pollen. Roy's Select are also possible to pollinate with oriental pollen and vice versa. Thanks to Roy's Select it's possible to create black heart OT. I have seen pictures of some of the hybrids Brian sent to me that have been really tall and with a high bud count. I have planted all of the bulbs from Brian in my greenhouse. My greenhouse are too low. Next year most of the lilies will be much taller than the greenhouse. I might have to raise my greenhouse 1 meter up.
This could be T-9-6. Not sure if it's a OT or aurelian. It's been pollinated with both aurelians and 4n OTs.
He's creating many unusual hybrids and he have told me new ways in lily hybridizing. This year I have pollinated Silk Road with oriental pollen and the pods are swelling. One of Brians hybrids I have desired for some years he sent to last year; Roy's Select. This lily gives black hearts or red hearts on it's offsprings. It will cross both ways with trumpets/aurelians but also OTs and orientals. Unfortunately my bulb didn't bloom this year so I will have to wait till next year before I can do exiting crosses with it.

This year I desided to grow the bulbs that I was going to pollinate in the greenhouse in a big box. Previous I have growing them in pots but they have dried too much. The soil is a mix of peat, plenty of sand and composted cow manure.
In 2011 I sow and planted out seedlings from seeds I got from Robert Griesbach. Last year I dug up 2 bulbs from 4n White Henryi type. I was surprised to see that the bud was orange but also bigger than buds at L. henryi. After it finally opened totally it was this beautiful lily. No doubt that it's a seedling from a aurelian cross that I had mixed with the seedlings from Griesbach. It's pollinated with pollen from Australia ( Mego hybrid x Black Heart White).
Every day new flowers have opened and are ready to be pollinated. Most of them are asiatics but also Lankon are blooming. I'm not sure if I have any pollen that would give seeds with it. The first flowers are also loosing their petals and most of the seed pods are swelling. A Danish friend of mine sent me some pollen of John Lykkegaards hybrids and I have done some pollinations with that too.

This on are a lily that I got from a friend. It's taller in the greenhouse than out in the garden. I really love 1c lilies and hope for some exiting seedling from this
This orange have been growing in my garden for some years but I can't remember where it comes from. So far no seed pods are swelling. It could be a triploid or a tetraploid. Today I pollinated it with some pollen from 4n asiatics.
In 2010 my wife and I where in Denmark for a vacation. The last day we where in Denmark we visited John Lykkegaard and his wife. John gave me some lilies, I'm quite sure that this one are one of them. I was really surprised when it opened and was not a tango. But it's a pure yellow 1c lily. I see many possibilities with it. All the pollen I use on it are from tango lilies.
This years seedlings are doing well and have been given some fertilizer but not so much. Last year many seedlings was growing bad and I suspect that they have had to strong solution of fertilizer in the water. This year I will be more careful. This is some of the seedlings:

One of the crosses didn't had the cross written on the bag, it simply was written First Crown. First Crown is a OA (oriental Asiatic) and I was surprised someone had been able to get seeds on it. I just had to try these seeds.

The seeds was sown last year and after a while they germinated but the cotyledon didn't grew more than about 1 cm. Even after one month it was still that short so finally I put it in my fridge since it had germinated hypogeal. After some months it was taken out from there and produced normal leafs. But I had some problems with them and the leafs died back but the bulbs did look ok. After some time I decided to give them a new try and let them stay in the fridge some new months. This spring they where taken out from there again but I was not sure if they would sprout one more time. I was really happy seeing one small leaf on one of them. After one week 5 bulbs had one leaf each and where planted in a new pot with new soil in the greenhouse. I really hope they will have flowers within a few years, then I will know if they are from a cross with Orientals or asiatics. This is how they looks like now:
That lily bloomed only that one year and never come back. But the grower was amazed seeing this unusual lily and used it's pollen on many of his other lilies. Thanks to him we still have tango lilies.

A few months after the visit to Latvia I got a package from Guntis. It contained lily bulbs from him and a few from a friend of him, Andris Krumins. I have already 2 hybrids from Andris in my garden and they are really beautiful. The first one is Ilga:
The second one is Mistika, a 1c yellow tango. I can't find any picture of it since I thought it was lost for me but last year I found it in my garden and this year it's growing in my greenhouse. This year I will take a picture of it.

The new hybrids from Andris are Novice:
One of them, Guntis Grants, I had been writing with a few weeks before we went there. He had invited us to his garden where he have his lily nursery. he have his own web site http://www.daugmaleslilijas.lv/en/en_index.htm.

We should also visit one other grower, Andris Krumins, but we never got there. When we arrived to Latvia’s capital city, Riga, we met Guntis and together we went to the botanical garden of Riga where it was held a lily show. Here are a few pictures from there:
After the show we went home to Guntis. He grows many lilies, mostly asiatics but also some trumpets and OTs. The next pictures here should have been from the nursery but I never took any pictures. I think it was since I was overwhelmed by all those lily flowers. Never in my life have I never ever seen so many lilies at one place, but also it had been a long day for us and it was a hot day. But I ordered some bulbs from Guntis that I wanted to use for breeding purpose and when they bloomed in my greenhouse last year many of them was photographed.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11817580164392352732noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-202837369336351957.post-46901241287839264402013-03-12T11:25:00.000-07:002013-03-12T11:25:29.803-07:00How I grow lilies from seedsI know that many who sow large amounts of lily seeds sow the seeds directly in the boxes that they grow the seedlings in the whole growing season or directly in the ground. This year I knew that I would saw more seeds than before and space was the big challenge. My hope was to grow 1000 seedlings this year. I had to put up a new shelf to be able to give all my seedlings sunshine. I don't give extra light since the temperature becomes too high for my OTs and 4n trumpets. Not all the crosses have germinated yet. But at the same time the daylilyseedlings have just begun to germinate. This how my growing room looks like now:
This is the size of the new boxes I am going to grow the seedlings in. The few seedlings I grew in these boxes last year on the tables was large. This winter I have got 20 of them. It is possible to grow 50 seedlings in each box and maybe 12 boxes on each table.

A few years ago I heard about this new lily, a close relative to L. henryi but blooming a few weeks later and with a little different seed pod. My experience growing it from seeds, and hybrids from it, is that they have poor germination percentage. John Lykkegaard told me that the seeds germinate better if the pot are placed cool for a few months after sowing.

This year I placed the pots in the windowsill in the room where I sow my lilies, with the window just open. I guess the temperature might be as low as 10 C / 50 F. After 3-4 weeks the first seedling germinated, and now one and a half months after sowing ( sown 1. January) they look like this:
This is not the first time he sends me pollen. I really appreciate that he do this since this gives me the possibility to do crosses with lilies I actually don't grow. In 2011 he send me pollen from : Lowana (asiatic) Dark purple OT? Black Back ,Brown pendant OT Dark Black ( both are Ryirube a cross between Lilium henryi and Lilium rubellum) and Robina (OT). Fall last year seedlings from :
WHITE HENRYI x DARK PURPLE RYIRUBE: many seeds
They are all crosses done with pollen from plants that I have never had in my garden.

A nice lady sent me pollen from Awesome last summer. The pollen gave me seeds from these crosses:

WHITE HENRYI x AWESOME: many seeds
LILIUM ROSTHORNII x AWESOME: few numbers of seeds
The L. rosthornii-hybrid are from the cross L. rosthornii x various trumpets. Seeds from John Lykkegaard. I'm not sure if it's a hybrid or L. rosthornii. The flowers looks like L. rosthornii.
The pollen he sent me this time where:

Aurelian:
Louise
Anton Mego hybrid x Black Heart White
Lilium henryi var. citrinum hybrid
Heart Throb
Butterscotch - not asiatic as I have written on the bag.
OT:
Regal Star

+ a Ryirude I'm not sure I have seen picture of.

John have sent me bulbs he have got from Charles Kroell. I find the aurelians most interesting and they will be planted in my greenhouse. They are:

Betty Sturley
Aurelian seedling (dark nectaries)
Aurelian seedling

Last fall Anton Mego sent me some bulbs from his hybrids, they where:

BEAUTIFUL VICTORIA (Aurelian)
TROPICAL GARDEN (Aurelian)
AM-04/2041-4 (Aurelian)? I asked Anton for pictures and he sent me pictures of all exept one. It'll be a surprise how this one looks like.
GERLACH (Aurelian)
MAGIC LAMP (Aurelian)
MY LITTLE BABY (small bulbs, will not bloom before next year) (Aurelian)
SLOVAK SAPPHIRE (OT)
My plan for this year is to use pollen from Tasmania to pollinate these lilies.
They where strains and had names after American national parks. I only grow one of them, Shenandoah. This is how it's looks like:

When I bought the seeds from DILS I didn't knew anything about it and I had never heard anything about it before. I have only one plant that have produced bulblets, I'm not able to produce seeds by pollinate 2 plants and grow Shenandoah from seeds.

The flowers are surprisingly small, not what I thought a 4n trumpet would look like. But I have done some crosses with it and it doesn't produce seeds when pollinated with White Henryi. But when pollinated with pollen from OTs and Ryirube the pods have been full of excellent seeds. In 2011 I pollinated Shenandoah with pollen from these lilies:

Mixed pollen from: 4n Black Beauty(?) - Pizzazz - OT R93/25, Mixed pollen from Miss Libby, Conca D'or and Alexandra, pollen from Starburst Sensation and A brown pendant Ryirube.

Every year I grow seedlings from Shenandoah the seeds germinate well and grow fast. This is a box with seedlings from last year:
Last year the bulb had split and had 2 stems. It was pollinated with :
Some of these crosses have been sown and both crosses with Lankon and L. nepalense are germinating well. The cross with Tiger Woods have 5 seedlings but there where few seeds in the pod.
The trumpets where nice and I decided to dig up one bulb that I wanted to pollinate the following year.
The bulb where planted together with some other bulbs, not seedlings. The bulb are rather dark. When it started to grow it come up with 2 stems but only with 3 buds. When it opened it's first flower it was a beautiful white and light pink flower with strong fragrance. Since there where only 3 flowers they where rather large.
Alexandra, Conca D'or, 4n Black Beauty (?), Miss Libby, Pizzazz, OT R93/25.
When the seed pods started to swell I was really surprised to see that the pod pollinated with 4n OT pollen was the only one that grew normally and actually gave me a pod filled with excellent seeds. The pods from crosses with L. henryi was looking not so well but had a few good seeds that germinated normally
The flowers was pollinated with different pollen but not all of the pollinations gave seeds. But pollinated with pollen from these lilies I got seeds:
Ryirube seedling ( I think it was a yellow one), dark purple Ryirube, brown pendant Ryirube, Starburst Sensation + Avocado, Robina. All these crosses gave many seeds.
For next year the bulbs have grown too big for my small greenhouse. But this lily produces many bulblets and I had some in the greenhouse from 2011 that I had planted in a larger pot. They will have some flowers this year.

Since last year I have been wondering why this lily are fertile when pollinated with OTs and not 2n trumpets. The seeds comes from a friend of mine in Denmark but I bought them from DILS since I didn't knew him at that time. He have also been able to do crosses with L. sargentiae and OTs. I don't know if that's why this lily are able to pollinate this lily with OT pollen or if it's something else. But I'm looking forward to see the flowers from these crosses.
But many seed companies only sell seeds from species or strains. But I wanted to grow hybrid seeds. From DILS I was told how to do this. This is how I pollinate lilies:
A few years ago I come in touch with a lily grower, John Lykkegaard. I had bought some lily seeds from http://dils.dk/ ( danish iris and lily society), their seedlist and there where something I was wondering about some of his crosses. He replied and explained what I was wondering about. In that email or the next he asked me if I would have some lily seeds from him. I was grateful and said yes. Over the next year I wrote to him several times, and he replied. In one email he told e that he could send me more seeds. When I got the seeds from him there where quite many crosses he had sent me.
The pictures below are selected seedlings in my own garden from Johns seeds.
It's a good feeling to fill the first pots, sow the seeds and write the cross on the label. And every year there are some seeds that starts to grow. This is what I started to sow this year:

* SHENANDOAH x (BLACK BEAUTY x (L. LONGIFLORUM x L. HENRYI)) 3 plants so far

* SHENANDOAH x TIGER WOODS 4 seeds germinated but one died

* WHITE HENRYI x ?

* WHITE HENRYI x L. HENRYI CITRINUM 2 seedlings

* WHITE HENRYI x AWESOME

* WHITE HENRYI x (SILK ROAD x BRAVURA)

* LILUM ROSTHORNII x TRUMPETS

* LILIUM SARGENTIAE HYBRID x STARBURST SENSATION + AVOCADO : 30 so far

* LILIUM ROSTHORNII x AWESOME 4 seedlings so far

*L. ROSTHORNII-HYBRID x AWESOME +others 4 seedlings so far

When I sow lilium seeds I put all the pots I sow the seeds in in a plastic box. I keep them there till the first seedlings start to show. Then I take the pot out and place it a cool but sunny place. I have heard that Lilium rosthornii can be hard to get a good germination percentage, but I have a good percentage by placing the pot cool and sunny.
This is what I have sown so far:
I have never sown so many lilium seeds before and hope I will find enough space for them both in the greenhouse and in the garden.

Thanks to John I recieved some seeds from Charles Kroell last year, most of them are sown this year but some of them was sown last year. I really hope that some of the will bloom this year. When I got the seeds from Charles most of the seed bags had a picture of the parents. Here are some of them:
The first seeds I got from OTs didn't germinate at all but a lily grower told me to put the seeds in my fridge and let them stay there a while. I sow the seeds in february and the seeds germinated, after months in the fridge, in October/November. But most of them survived the winter. In 2010, late fall, I wrote a letter to Mr. Robert Griesbach asking him about how to convert lilies from diploid to tetraploid level. He wrote back to me, and together with the reply was some seed bags:

Since I had bad experience growing OT lilies from seeds I send my question to the Yahoo lily group. I got two different replies and so I did some of what I was told from both of the replies and got amazing germination. The pictures I will show are from the last two years germination of OT lilies.

About January 15. I soak the seeds in water for 2-3 days, changing water twice a day.
And covered with about 1 cm perlite. The box with the seeds are then placed in a plastic bag that are closed well and placed a cool, sunny place. The temperature should not be higher than 18 C, 64 F. Lilies germinate better when placed cool than high temperature.
Then, after 2 weeks the seeds starts to germinate:

After 2 more weeks they look like this:

The seeds continued to germinate for weeks. At the time they where ready for transplanting I'm sure that there must have been more than 50 seedlings.
